Start a new job next year, wondering if I should get the new 16" MBP or get a PC laptop. I've never really used a PC properly before, is it worth the mac not being as fast for video vs learning PCness?

    • Is work paying for the machine?! I guess it's a preference over OS. I cannot go to a PC ever again, BUT stick to what you like, are comfortable with, etc.ideaist
    • My understanding is the new MBPs are killer at video. Faster than the $15K Mac Pros even.monospaced
    • Yeah, they'll buy the machine so I reckon I'll go with the highest spec MBP. We have some PC's in the studio to test stuff, but I find the interfaces annoying.PhanLo
    • I've been doing simple 4K linear edits with my macbook and it's blazing fast. There are some software bugs because of the new hardware but those will get workedzarkonite
    • out over time. I think the M1 Max is a good future proof CPU that works well now. Don't buy into the hype tho, you will need a lot of ram.zarkonite
    • it takes half a day to get the crtl + apple button down. other than that the two mouse buttons is a real kicker. GO PC!AQUTE
    • but highest spec mac or highest spec PC. i am sure PC would smoke it. if work is paying run that bill mofo!AQUTE
    • Get the Macstoplying
    • Mac it is!PhanLo
    • @zarkonite There's a nasty memory leak bug in the first release of Monterey that may or may not being affecting you RAM use!evilpeacock
    • @evilpeacock there's that, but you also still need ram to load up your data, swapping off the SSD while editing is still a bad idea.zarkonite

    Hi,

so I'm setting up my new MBP and it's running Big Sur.
    Question are:

    - Can I upgrade to Monterey without any issues with Adobe? Anyone facing any relevant issues?

    - Anyone using Serato? I received aa Email from Serato a couple of Months ago, or Rane...asking for people to not upgrade immediately to Monterey. Anyone?

    - Any other issue I might be aware of?

I just hope my Wacom works or else I'm gonna be really pissed.

    Thanks!

    • Just stay on Big Sur? My rule of thumb is stay (at least) one major release behind, and it's served my pretty well.section_014
    • Serato should work, but Rane SL boxes do not. Try searching reddit/r/djsbocadeets

    $3T

"Apple has reached yet another major milestone. The iPhone maker topped a market value of $3 trillion Monday — the first publicly traded company ever to be worth that much.

Shares of Apple (AAPL) were briefly up about 3% to a new all-time high of $182.88, surpassing the $182.85 per share it needed to be worth $3 trillion. The stock later pulled back from that level.
Apple's market value first crossed the $1 trillion threshold in August 2018 and passed $2 trillion in August 2020."

My work shipped me a 16” MacBook Pro M1 MAX. Lol I would have preferred a 13” or 14” but nobody asked me.

Anyway, this thing is huge, heavy, boxy, and kind of absurd. Without tapered edges it’s so clunky looking and feeling. It has giant rubber feet. Looks ridiculous. The notch doesn’t bother me and the UI around it is interesting.

This may be impressive tech but it feels like a step back in industrial design. It reminds me of the design of MacBook from 2006 but with a cheap plastic keyboard.

I wonder if it was a mistake to buy first gen M1.
I have Air since last summer, it crashes weekly. The screenshot happened after installing Monterey.

Also Indesign has horrible bugs, text disappears, that might be Adobe's problem but even latest updates couldn't fix it.
Compatibility is still an issue with several apps.

    • If possible I'd have held off on Monterey (I still am since 10.3 reports haven't confirmed that all known bugs are fixed)evilpeacock
    • Issues with Google or other third-party software aren't a huge surprise with a massive architecture transition either.evilpeacock
    • As to InDesign, Adobe's last annual big CC version jump is only a couple months old, and as usual is still pretty buggy with many of their apps.evilpeacock
    • Oops! Monterey is 12.2 as most current stable release, but I am also following 12.3 beta tester reporting.evilpeacock
