Can this Apple M1++ architecture be used in iPhones? Would it improve the phone speed? Or do they already do this?

    • Apple has used their SOC chips in iPhones for many years. They did put the M1 in the iPads but so far it’s been the AX line.monospaced
    • The M1 has a ton in common with the A14 Bionic chip in iPhones.monospaced
    • Eventually the power of a M1 Pro/ Max will be in a pocket sized iPhone. But the AX in iiPhones are already powerful and nearly on par with standard M1 chips.NBQ00
    • You've got it the wrong way around - the M1 is the product of a decade-plus of iPhone development of SoCs, as Mono points out.Nairn
    • crazy how close they are tbh. A14 basically a 6-core M1 with a smaller footprintkingsteven
    • Form factor, batery life, energy usage are all important factors - maybe when Apple switches to 3nm process?
But why would u use a M1 Max to browse instagram?

apple up to their old tricks again?
this just in from a reseller:

"We've noticed some customers have experienced installation failures on the latest release of macOS Monterey. The issue can be resolved but does require hardware attention from a technician or a complete wipe of your system resulting in all data being lost. Please avoid updating for now.

"The issue primarily affects older Intel-based Macs and can cause the system to bricked, becoming unusable until fixed. If you are currently experiencing this issue please contact us."

    • This was fixed on November 5th.

How are people finding working on the new Macbook Pros? Specifically, is anyone doing any motion or 3D work on them? (After effects, Cinema 4D – editing, animation, 3D rendering, etc.).

The reason I ask is because we're putting together specs and prices for new equipment for our department and with the way we are working coming out of covid (very flexible in terms of location), ideally we want to move to laptops with monitors at our office for the mobility.

It's been a month(ish), so I thought I'd gauge some real world feedback. Are they as good as the reviews are saying? What spec are you running if you are doing motion/3D work?

    • still waiting :-|kingsteven

    • Threadripper and nvidia3k series gpus are ideal, none of which apple has to offer. OctaneX and cycles(?) do work with apple thoughseldon

Just decided to order a MacBook Pro 2015 15" i7 2,8Ghz 16GB 512SSD AMD Radeon R9 M370X for 700€ with one year guarantee in good state...

...to replace my MacBook Pro 2012 13" i7 2,9Ghz that I bought out of emergency with a very tight budget to replace my MBP 2009.

Would love to buy a Mac Mini but I still need a Laptop and I prefer to wait where they're going with the Minis.

A new MacBook Pro is totally out of my budget because i barely worked the last two years since I became a parent and I have to many expenses at the moment and need two new teeth...LOL!

    • well I considered keeping my MBP 2012 and acquire a Mini but...spend almost twice for it for the 16GB versionoey_oey
    • They give me 400€ for my MBP 2012 so it will actually cost me 300€.oey_oey

I've just received my new M1 16" Laptop. The software has been updated to the latest Monterey and is all set.

My previous 2013 Laptop today is asking me to go straight from Catalina to Big Sur!

Why is the brand new shit not wanting to update to Big Sur?

    • Big Sur = 2020
      Monterey = 2021

"Apple AR Headset Coming in Late 2022 With Mac-Level Computing Power"

    https://www.macrumors.com/2021/1…

"According to Kuo, the higher-end main processor is said to be similar to the M1 chip Apple introduced for its first set of Apple silicon Macs last year, while a lower-end processor will manage the sensor-related aspects of the device.

Kuo says the initial AR headset will be able to operate independently without needing to be tethered to a Mac or iPhone, and Apple is intending it to support a "comprehensive range of applications" with an eye toward replacing the ‌iPhone‌ within ten years."

Details of things that weren't happening last week on my old 2013 macbook ...

    1. My VPN to the office server is now so slow it is unusable.
    2. Adobe Illustrator is slower than I have EVER seen. 1 nudge left of a circle takes 8secs to process! Seriously.
    3. Apple Mail periodically doesn’t loading emails.
    4. Finder has crashed 2 times copying files.
    5. Document/Image icons in finder used to be little previews. Now only generic icons.
    6. My Steam Games don’t work
    7. The sound output toggle is now hidden in a little settings menu. Which I use lots a day to switch from playing my music on the house sonos to Zooms I need just on my Mac.
    8. Playing music through my Sonos is now glitchy.
    9. “iTunes” is ramming Apple Music down my throat with stuff I can’t remove.

And lots of other little things I always wanted to see changed not being changed. I like...

    1. I like the fingerprint thing to startup and login to things.
    2. The look
    3. The speed Apps open

    • time for a new one?_niko
    • Is it due to the office security/vpn running in the background?shapesalad

I also suggest https://rogueamoeba.… for more control.

    • I feel the remainder of the issues are related to your VPN as @shapesalad said. Can you disable just to see if everything resolved?!

    • Thanks guys. 5 is still hit or miss.
      7 is solved. xx

  • Hayzilla0

Oh you can delete item one from the above. It was my slow broadband causing the issue it turns out. Never thought to check.
So it turns out the 144mb download that I am experiencing on my other laptop and phone is maxed at 6mb on this fucking M1. It's a known issue... FFS

In an extensive paywalled report based on interviews and purported internal Apple documents, The Information revealed that Tim Cook personally forged a five-year agreement with the Chinese government during a series of in-person visits to the country in 2016. The need to push for a closer alliance with the Chinese government reportedly came from a number of Apple executives who were concerned about bad publicity in China and the company's poor relationship with Chinese officials, who believed that Apple was not contributing enough to the local economy.

Alleged internal documents show that Cook "personally lobbied officials" in China over threats made against Apple Pay, iCloud, and the App Store. Cook set out to use a "memorandum of understanding" between Apple and a powerful Chinese government agency called the National Development and Reform Commission to formally agree to a number of concessions in return for regulatory exemptions. The 1,250-word agreement was written by Apple's government affairs team in China and stewarded by Cook as he met with Chinese officials.

In May 2016, Cook announced that Apple would be investing $1 billion in the Chinese ride-hailing startup Didi Chuxing in a pointed attempt to mollify authorities, the report added. Shortly after, Cook, Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, and government affairs head Lisa Jackson met with senior government officials in Zhongnanhai, the central headquarters of the Communist Party of China.

Cook's negotiations led to the successful signing of the multibillion-dollar agreement, quashing a number of regulatory actions against the company with exemptions and enabling access to the Chinese market, in return for significant investments, business deals, and worker training in the country.

The agreement included a pledge from Apple to help Chinese manufacturers develop "the most advanced manufacturing technologies," "support the training of high-quality Chinese talents," use more components from Chinese suppliers, sign deals with Chinese software firms, collaborate with research in Chinese universities, and directly invest in Chinese tech companies, as well as assistance with around a dozen Chinese government causes. If there were no objections from either side, the deal would be automatically be extended for an additional year until May 2022, according to the agreement.

Apple vowed to invest "many billions of dollars more" than its current expenditure in China, including on new retail stores, research and development facilities, and renewable energy projects. Other internal documents reportedly showed that Apple's pledge amounted to more than $275 billion in spending over a period of five years.

The Information suggests that Apple is heavily reliant on Cook for international negotiations and speculates that it could face difficulties dealing with government affairs when Cook stands down as the company's CEO.

For more information, see The Information's full report.
