Apple M2 Chip to be unveiled in the first half of 2022.
- Waiting for the M3 and beyond, with 3nm process is a better bet.grafician
- Imagine a M3 Pro/Max with 128 cores and 128GB RAM for the same $5K just a year ahead...grafician
- derp, there will always be a better one coming :)monospaced
- Sure, but the jump in performance and power consumption from the 3nm nodes would be colossal. M1 and M2 are just prototypes for the maybe-so-called M3 :)grafician
- And after 3nm nodes...that's about it :)
So far that's the limit for silicon chips. 1nm is not certain and bellow that is practically impossible?grafician - @monospaced so when you say "derp, there will always be a better one coming" that's either ignorant or low probability. But we'll see after 2025 ;)grafician
- It's neither ignorant, nor low probability. Apple will make a more powerful one for each generation, in all probable likelihood. Sorry. :)monospaced
- To quote Moore "Nothing doubles forever" hehegrafician
- Moore also said he expected his observation to extend until around 2020 and then taper off.Morning_star
- Moores law is irrelevant.monospaced

Actual questine:
My work got me a 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro. Lovely powerful machine but I prefer to work on a larger, sharp monitor. In the past, I keep the laptop closed and work on a 27” Dell Ultrasharp ~2880x1440 monitor.
So, to be clear: I want to work on one single monitor, roughly around the 24 to 27” size... but it has to be sharp AF.
I want to upgrade to a sharper monitor because text and UI will be sharper. So I start looking at 4K monitors, but I’m reading on forums that 4K isn’t optimized for Mac – That for the BEST scaling of MacOS you want to scale down to 2.5K or up to 5K.
So I start looking at 5K monitors, and the only good option is the LG 5K that is available on apple.com for $1299.
But Apple makes a new iMac M1 24-inch with a 4.5K screen – which is of course optimized for working with MacOS. A different aspect ratio but ultimately a better screen than the LG 5K monitor. And beautiful. And the price is $1299.
So, I could get an iMac with the display I want for the same price as the
THE PROBLEM: my work won’t let me use my own personal iMac for work. It is a security issue. There is no way around it. Even if I pay for the iMac myself, I can’t use it for work. I am required to use the 16-inch MBP that they sent me.
THE QUESTINE: is it possible to buy myself an iMac and use it for personal use but then also somehow use the iMac as a single external monitor connected to my work MacBook?
Note: I can’t install any software on the MacBook and I can’t even do something like signing into my personal Apple ID. I can connect Bluetooth and stuff but I can’t install software.
- Nope. Sadly not. The old iMac's have target display mode, but the M1's don't allow that. Unless anyone has updated info.Ianbolton
- I wanted to use my 5k iMac as a separate display, but no chance.Ianbolton
- Dang itnb
- Ian: there are software options: Duet or Luna. But I can’t install software.nb
- I got my wife and myself https://www.benq.com…, No USB-C, BUT price is right and image is great.ideaist
- Is that (sort of) a remote access solution? I worry about lag with thatIanbolton
- One of them has a dongle but I’m not sure if that removes the lagnb
- Get a Dell?
https://www.dell.com…grafician - Graf, that is not a 5k monitor. It’s 4k and as I said, people online say 4k doesn’t scale well from macOSnb
- Hey, you wanted a sharp monitor working great with MBPs...grafician
- People say the UI doesn’t scale to 4K as well, that Apple optimized the UI scaling for ~2.5K to 5Knb
- I meant ~2.5K or 5K. But 4K is weird, apparently. I have not seen this myself.nb
- Why not try a 4k or 5K monitor plugged into your laptop and see what YOU think. The forum commenters might be idiots.comicsans
- Yeah that’s a lot of effort thonb
- It’s not just forum commenters. This is a well-documented Mac issue (scaling rounding)nb
- I'm waiting for LG's new C2 42" TV to use as a display (coming out soon). Should be plenty crisp when back enough, be around $1k, and larger.fyoucher1
- ^ will connect via HDMIfyoucher1
- Is the LG UltraFine 5K not an option? It's all I've worked on for the past couple of years and it's really the only choice. Highly recommended.bogue
- @bogue yeah I’ll probably buy one. Just waiting to see if Apple announces a new cheaper display next month.nb
- oh yes, I was reading about that. very curious what "cheaper" means to apple.bogue
- Had the Dell 27" + MBP 16" Intel Big Sur, doing UI work no rounding or sharpness issues you keep referring, now waiting for the new Macbooks to switch againgrafician
- They best thing to do would be just try it yourself. buy a 4k and/or 5k monitor from a local best buy or Costco. Take back what you don't like.dbloc

- Entry level specs and few ports are not worth it, even tho' the design is very slick
Maybe next gen...grafician - Great design from the side, yes. Not so much from the front. But we had that discussion a while back.NBQ00
- ^ thatformed
- that bit at the back... would stop me getting the iMac as far back as i can with my desk/wall situation.shapesalad
- ^ no offense but you guys are idiotsnb
- This is an iMac (not Pro): a consumer-level computer. What consumer-level computer would you rather have in your home, compared to this? This thing is dope!nb
- This is more than enough computer power and ports for its intended purpose and audience. Even at entry level, the original M1 is no slouch; this can do a tonmonospaced
- The hardware design harkens back to the original iMac which is smart and beautiful. Bit at the back? The stand? Find a nicer one.monospaced
- in the future all computers are tabletsscarabin
- Aesthetics are on point, but 24" is too small. Mac Mini plus your own monitor is the way to go.section_014
- Depends on viewing distance, of course. For most home desks, 24 inches is perfectnb
- 24 is like twice the size of a laptop screen. 4k. Plenty big.monospaced
- Mac mini plus Apple keyboard plus 4k 27” display plus mouse and/or touch pad is more expensive and clumsier than this though.monospaced
- Exactly. You can not deny the value of this iMac. Excellent. I’ll remind you that this iMac is 4.5k and in this case is much better than a 27” 4k display.nb
- Entry level specs and few ports are not worth it, even tho' the design is very slick

Tim Cook got a 500% pay raise last year. Now Apple store employees are considering unionization.
Apple CEO Tim Cook’s 2021 compensation increased 569% last year, hitting $98.7 million—$3 million in annual salary, $82.3 million in stock awards, and a $12 million cash bonus. That works out to 1,400 times what the average Apple employee earned.

The way they’ve implemented full screen in MacOS for the notch MacBook eliminates the benefit of full screen. They need this notch and they’re afraid to hide nav items so they kludged it.
Feels like a “ooops we shipped that without a thinking it through” but hopefully good apps figure a way to improve on it and Apple does something.
Good example of very lazy UI design.
- It makes sense to leave the full screen function in for external monitors and for split screen... but they need to think about the primary use case. Yeeshnb
- mac mini pro for me when it comes outshapesalad
- Full screen works fine when the notch has black around it. Same as the old screen size just taller.monospaced
- It works, but clicking full screen in Figma gives me no additional screen height. I get that it’s a matter of perspective.nb
- Like, you lose the extra height of full screen mode but now you get that extra height during non-full screen so it really just FEELS like I’m losing somethingnb
- Instead, it should move your tabs up there and slide down on hover. Or let you choose your preference.nb

When I come into this thread you all remind me of my kids at dinner time.
"These potatoes are gross!!"
"They're just potatoes with butter and some salt, what could possibly be better than that?"
"Yuck"
- Because some people are idiots and say potatoes with butter and salt are gross and actually prefer potatoes with butter and salt from another chef.monospaced
- Even if that other chef is making the same shit, just on a different plate with a much shittier seating area and neighborhood.monospaced

Is anyone else noticing the speakers making a crackling sound on the new M1 Pro MacBook? It comes at random times, perhaps more when I swap between apps.
- That sounds like your CPU is hitting 100%. This is super common in the audio production world.section_014
- It seems like its a common problem :/Chimp

@Chimp
I have the same issue, it comes with a butt.
Some 4k videos on youtube do this, I have no idea why, it happened with Netflix in the past but that just stopped doing this.
Here is an example:
https://www.qbn.com/reply/404902…I use winamp for mac for music playback, with a bluetooth headphone, a 3.5 mm headphone jack (amp, or earphone), and sometimes the speakers, it plays music non-stop what gets muted sometimes.
Connected via 3.5 mm headphone jack:
Music playback has no issues but opening up a 4k or a HD
video after 2-3 hours of heavy usage doing the same thing results the audio attached to the video to have a really annoying popping noise.Bluetooth: 100% random, sometimes it starts doing it after a track change or when i first start playing a video in a browser, only a restart helps. And I can trigger it by navigating in the Google Earth Pro app.
Speakers: After some usage but only while playing a video. Music playback is affected at random times, I usually notice it while scrolling in a browser.
This happens like one time in a week so its barely noticeable.
Also on a side-note idk why but this beautiful cunt doesn't likes Adobe Encore, it almost blew up the other night while I was encoding a short clip. But the performance is eh fuckme*, like using win95 on a pentium4 compared to my desktop i7 with 2 1080s :D
*until I open too many apps or browser tabs lol

Apple is exploring the possibility of integrating a fully functioning Mac within a keyboard, reminiscent of home computers of the 80s, such as the Commodore 64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum.- no thanks. why not get a mac mini and ANY keyboard you want... and here's the critical point - if you spill tea over it, won't destroy the mac!shapesalad
- I detroyed a macbook pro with a cup of tea. Cost me a new motherboard. have spilt tea on MacBooks, had to wait 48+ to dry when you could take battery out.shapesalad
- Im certain they will make it spillproofdrgs
- It’ll look like a MacBook Pro with the display removednb
- But seriously, whichever way/however small or big you design the computer, there will always be a keyboard, so might just as well put everything in theredrgs
- It's a niche market but this could be the opposite of a Mac Mini where you have a entire computer that can Airplay to wall-mounted TVs or other screens.evilpeacock
- duz it come with a SyQuest drive?MrT
- Well, I hate Apple mice and keyboards, so this would be a hard pass.section_014

@nb: "The closer I look at these new 24 inch iMacs, the more I realize how great they are. Fantastic product design. Also happens to be a pretty great deal considering the display quality and tech inside. I would buy one in a second if I had room in my house for a non-work computer."
Was very curious and went and got one, and yes, you were right
- 8/8 cores, 16GB, 512SSD faster than imac 27" and MBP pro 16" both intel and with double the specs (tons of tabs open, Figma desktop with dozen of huge files, Adobe CC, affinity, maybe 10-12 apps open all zero lag, and this is considered consumer line)
- design - only the silver one is serious enough for a designer and if you have your desk not against the wall, you can marvel at it 360* (thin as an iphone ffsake!)
- screen image = wow
- screen size 24" vs 27" imac = you forget the 27" size after half hour of usage (also a trick, if you make the dock size smaller, the actual screen size feels bigger)
- ports = 4, but you need an extra hub for serious usage
bonus: zero fan noise (fans at 2500/6000 most of the times)
that's about it, waiting for the new M2 macbook pros and no more upgrades for at least 3 years
- @monospaced fuck your Mini + extra monitor! You basically can carry around the imac 24 wherever you gografician
- Disagree @ screen size. 24" feels like a laptop screen after you are used to 27".section_014
- indeed I had them close to each other, the 27 is def bigger, but after you're left with only the 24 on your desk, you forget the 27 real quickgrafician
- also another thing worth mentioning, I have no clue what external monitor to get if needed, the 24 is 4.5K while normal monitors are 4K or 5Kgrafician
- You were JUST saying that it’s a better bet to wait for the M3 next year, because this is just entry level first gen model.monospaced
- Also +1monospaced
- @monospaced I was NOT hostile towards YOU, just thinking your proposal of Mini + external monitor is crap. And yes, I was wrong on the M3, buthat would be idealgrafician
- Imean I needed new machines now, but waiting for the M3 or whatever would've been the smart choice if you can waitgrafician
- Guyz - just wait for M10'sshapesalad
- @shape even better!grafician
- #monospaced seriously, get one if you want, it was around 1800 euros and beats Intel $3K-4K setups in performancegrafician
- #shape but seriously no, M10 would mean 10 years forward and we are hitting transistor shrinking limitsgrafician
- I never said anything about a mini and monitor being better lol.monospaced
- nor did I mention hostility. In fact you started talking about me here out of nowheremonospaced
- Np just making sure we're not fighting anymore, cool?grafician
- you came out with the "fuck your Mac mini..." bit, which is confusing, because I never suggested that and it felt very unnecessarily aggressive.monospaced
- You have me confused with someone else. I never proposed a Mac mini + monitor. I said a Pro level machine in a Mac mini case would be great for video editors.monospaced
- And I would bet that Apple agrees. https://9to5mac.com/…monospaced
- I know that most video editors would love it, as I happen to know a ton of them ,and that's what they talk about being ideal.monospaced
- I didn't mentioned video on this iMac 24, cuz I know videographers need much more powerful machines, maybe the next iMac Pro?grafician
- and I didn’t recommend a mini and a monitor!monospaced
- Except oblast year when I imagined a pro version for video pros, which you absolutely shit on for no good reason anyone could conceive ofmonospaced
