this looks interesting, if I'm reading this correctly, if you have an older 5k retina imac, you can use it as a display

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/…

no need to dish out all that cash on a studio display if you don't have to.

Not sure how or if this works with m1 chips but I don't see why not.

    • ok apparently you can go from an m1 to any iMac using luna display https://www.youtube.…_niko
    • The article is clear this was only for iMacs made a decade ago. Hasn’t been an option for at least 8 years.monospaced
    • The source mac must be from before 2019 and the iMac display must run sierra or earlier. Apple basically killed this in 2014.monospaced
    • It 100% does not work for any current Mac or with M1.monospaced
    • yeah you're right but I think the video above shows that it can be done with the luna display gizmo_niko
    • Totally possible no idea. It’s just not target disk mode.monospaced

Now that the 27" iMacs have been axed, I can see this mod being a trend as all the old models get older and retired:

Great looking monitor compared to the PC black plastic tat.

Haven't seen anyone do it with the thinner 2013+ model design. Curious to see if that is possible.

    • bonus points for connecting the original power button and iSight web cam. Speakers would be a good mod too.shapesalad
    • I have a 27 in with a fried video card. thinking of giving this a go and adding storage.rootlock

I’m returning the Studio Display. The display is just too reflective. My office lets in natural sunlight and I’m getting a headache trying to read text through the reflection.

At night it’s good but if my option is this monitor vs sunlight then sunlight wins every time.

P.S. The camera is total garbage and a software fix may improve it but it’s not going to make it amazing. I don’t care about it but buyer beware.

    • Enough pushback and they'll release a hood for $900.face_melter

    • isn't it the same glass as on the iMacs/ iMac Pro's?NBQ00
    • Maybe it is? I don’t get why my iPhone and iPad are so pleasant to use, even in sunlight, but this big display is impossiblenb
    • If I can take a look at the nano crystal model at an Apple store, I’ll consider that one.nb
    • That centre stage feature - no one wants that, when you dart out of frame to blow your nose etc, you don't want your web cam following you....shapesalad
    • Btw if you have a darkened workspace, the Studio Display is doooopenb
    • The reason iPhone and iPad screens are so pleasant is because you can constantly tilt and move them to not get reflections.Hayzilla
    • Yeah maybe you just need to adjust your place or rotate the display.NBQ00
    • Change houses, not your display!grafician
    • Just buy the $499 depolarizing glasses (don't forget the $49 charging cable).i_monk
    • In terms of scale - do you run such a 5k screen at 2560x1440? otherwise all the UI + Text is going to be too small to see?shapesalad
    • Yes you run it at that size but everything is exactly 2x resolution. There’s no fractional scaling. That’s the whole point of 27-inch at 5Knb
    • To be clear, the windows are beside me not behind me. They’re 90degrees from the lensnb

I didn't realize that the 27-inch iMac has been discontinued.

    • yeah now you have to get the studio+display, and mess around with moving two items.shapesalad

    my latest gripe:

today i had the wifi unplugged to re-arrange some cords but wanted to listen to some music. my MBP then told me my password was wrong. i was recently gifted an old 2010 clunker, so i tried that. no good. i knew it could be only one thing, and sure enough: i wasn't allowed to log in to my own fucking computer without an active wifi connection. wtf.

    • that's weird because I can log into my Mac without a wifi connection and I do so on the train regularly for the last few yearsmonospaced
    • That probably means the machine is set up to remotely authenticate with a company. Used/recycled Macs with corp. security settings are ditched all-the-time.evilpeacock
    • Not sure why this has an upvote because this is pure user error and is absolutely not a problem with macs.monospaced

The M1 chip in the iMac is the same as in iPad Pro’s. So essentially an iPad Pro would be faster at rendering than a Intel Xeon iMac Pro.

    • Not so fast. You also need a lot of RAM to hold the 3D scenes and other stuff. Sure, they have the same CPU/GPUs but the architecture is quite different...grafician
    • < But very impressive results indeed!grafician
    • The imac M1 is very impressive as that machine has def only 16GB of RAM and under $2K & other 2 machines have at least 32GB and cost double at least :))grafician
    • I’m pretty sure the 16GB of ram I got in my iPad Pro is enough for this scene. The iMac M1 in that video probably has 16GB Ram. Thermals it’s another thing.NBQ00
    • The iPad Pro would probably get hot quickly rendering such stuff.NBQ00
    • I did some Blender tests with the imac M1 and there's no sounds or heat coming from it. Fans at 2500/7000 too
      Blender loads instantly too
      grafician
    • The architecture of the processor and memory is identical no?monospaced
    • Yes identical except thermalsNBQ00
    • Yeah. That’s what I figured. 100% identical chips and 100% identical M1 architecture for the silicon and memory. Literally identical in EVERY SINGLE WAYmonospaced
    • Except form factor, which is the thermal package. But yeah the iPad and the iMac have the same performance before thermal throttling if any.monospaced
    • I thought Macs are kinda shit at 3D?inteliboy
    • You’re probably thinking of Intel macs. Apple dropped Intel and now makes their own silicon. They still aren’t that great but they’re better than before.monospaced
    • "They still aren't that great"... huh? I think they're pretty great.NBQ00
    • If you put one up against a decent pc with a good video card it gets embarrassingly smoked, still. But they are still good as I clearly said. Don’t act confusedmonospaced
    • WTF are you even talking about? IT'S NOT the same! there's no "chip" there's SoC!
Do you even know tech or just babble around?!
      grafician
    • *yawn, of course it's identical. Chip or SoC, it's just a reference to the M1 which is identical in both. The fact you can't get past this is beyond me.monospaced
    • BTW, there's not much to get here, so don't get so excited, and please stop mansplaining what's been obvious for years nowmonospaced
    • The M1 in the iPad is identical in every conceivable way to the M1 in the mini and MacBook, architecture and all. If you disagree you're the ignorant one.monospaced
    • The only difference is form factor (aka, thermal solutions). If you want to focus on the pointless word I choose, that's because you're a condescending cunt.monospaced
    • Thing is, you seem more intent on correcting me than admitting you're actually fucking wrong yourself. Makes it look like you're just babble, biatch.monospaced

Apple Studio Display Review: At $1,599, You Won’t Get What You Pay For

The sharp new monitor makes a good case for people who are all in on Macs, but the screen doesn’t stand out against competitors and the webcam is bad

People have two divergent reactions to Apple’s new $1,599 Studio Display with a webcam and surround-sound speakers:

#1 Oh, awesome! Should I buy it?

#2 Oh, awesome! How well does it clip my toenails, load the dishwasher and do my taxes? I’m not touching a monitor more expensive than my actual computer unless it does everything.

After a week of testing, I have answers. Surprise! It isn’t a good nail clipper. OK, the real surprise is, it isn’t a good webcam, especially after how much Apple talked it up.

PC monitor shipments soared during the Great Work-From-Home Migration, so you can see why Apple would want to offer something other than its $4,999 professional display. But still, $1,599? That’s more than twice the price of many high-end monitors.

The new monitor is meant to pair with the pro-targeted Mac Studio, which starts at $1,999. Yes, that means $3,600 or more for a shiny new Mac setup. However, you can buy the Studio Display separately to pair with most newer MacBooks. (Sorry, PC users, it might work but wasn’t designed with Windows in mind.)

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/app…

    • So...a review about pricing?

If I remember correctly old Apple 2s and all that vintage stuff still were $4-5K even back in the day...
      grafician
    • But it’s not really twice the price of high end. It’s more expensive , and is overpriced, but it has more features too.monospaced
    • More features really? Just give us a sharp clear display with multiple ports.utopian
    • It has that. And more. If you don’t want more then you can get that too. Not sure why that’s an issue.monospaced
    • I agree. I wouldn’t pay the extra few hundred for the 12mp camera, spatial audio speakers, 10 gigabit Ethernet hub, thunderbolt hub, bionic chip.monospaced
    • But if you want all that it is an attractive package. Or you can get it all separately and it’s still kinda pricey.monospaced
    • For example, a comparable port hub runs about $200 from a 3rd party. Camera about the same, and it wouldn’t have the smart features. Speakers too. $1400monospaced

    • i don't get how the Ultrafine 4k IPS I have is less than half the price of the 5k?kingsteven
    • Build quality, abundance of 4k panels, bandwidth, etc.monospaced
    • obviously the panels are rare, they're both 10bit, usb-c etc. mine has the ergo stand which is great too. it seems far more of a jump in price for what you getkingsteven
    • than the jump between LG and apple.kingsteven
    • 5k is better than 4k. Therefore 5k costs more. This is a very basic concept in modern economics hahahahanb
    • the point was Studio Display is actually great value compared to other high price optionsgrafician
    • I agree grafician. I’m pointing it out to all the idiots who are comparing the Studio Display to all the 4K monitors on the market.nb
    • bunch of brainiacs here. i'm not disagreeing by saying they double the price on resolution alone... goes to show apple could probably do a 4k display for <$899kingsteven
    • which is less than the old thunderbolt display retailed for (if they wanted)kingsteven
    • Yeah I would love Apple to make a 24inch 4.5k monitor for $999 (the same display from the iMacs)nb
    • Don’t forget, Apple isn’t in the business of making “slightly better” products than Dell, LG, etc. They’re in the business of making very superior products.nb
