Stop eating any food that comes in a packet has got to be a good basis... cooking from scratch FTW.
- Been doing that for several months now - all from scratch, dry beans, fresh veg - it's a good habit to have..mikotondria3
- +1. doing this for years now.uan
- Made bread this afternoon, to go with the blackbean burgers and home-made country fries.
Healthy doesn't have to be thatmikotondria3 - healthy. I love 'recreating' fast food but from scratch. Made refried beans and burritos last week. Full of flavor, if wonky.mikotondria3

@MrT
So true and no too difficult.
A good rule is if you don't know how something is made, why the hell would you eat it? And if you do know how and it's bad, don't eat it!
I need to find a way of making healthy treats, like flap jack etc, they might not be healthy or help weight loss, but home made flapjack and cake is way better than a snickers bar full of unknown chemicals.

Also Cereal!!
As far as I'm concerned it the biggest trick of the food marketing world.
It isn't proper food and it convinces you that cereal is the right choice for breakfast. Which is wrong. You could have steak for breakfast if you wanted, or a mild curry, you don't need to stick to cereal, breakfast can be like any other meal. Make it healthy and you're sorted.
Don't get me wrong I like a bowl of some cereals but I'm under no illusion it's proper food or good for me.
- Add hot sauce to the mild curry, of course.mikotondria3
- Haha nooo! Don't wanna hurt your stomach!Hombre_Lobo
- Egg is the perfect breakfast food.mikotondria3
- With hot sauce.mikotondria3
- Cereal is terrible! My parents finally realized this.instrmntl

Also on the subject.
Don't skip breakfast folks. When you wake your body is starving in a catabolic state. Meaning your body is needing energy so it does the easiest way it knows how - by breakdown muscle tissue to get energy.
Don't miss breakfast, you'll lose muscle mass and are also likely to gain weight from your body worrying about when it's getting it's next meal and thus storing what you eat more so than usual.
Anything for breakfast is better than nothing. Even a big fat chocolate bar.
Catabolism is also common after exercise so be sure to eat as soon as you can.
- +1 couldn't agree more...MrT
- apart from maybe the chocolate bit : )MrT
- When I ran a lot, I found its better to have a big breakfast, medium lunch and light dinner.instrmntl
- It also helps sleep and easier to wake up early. You're hungry!instrmntl
- Ha yeh. Im a fan of gorging myself at breakfast. I find I don't have to eat very much for the whole day after that.Hombre_Lobo

yogurt is essential. I've been eating daily for a few years and I rarely get sick (haven't had the flu in years...god, I hope I didn't just curse myself).
Juicing is also great. I do it to supplement what I probably don't get in my normal diet. Kale + spinach + apple + cucumber + lemon = delicious.
- I haven't had the flu in 15 years.mikotondria3
- That juice combo sounds great, btw. Bit of hemp protein and maybe a berry in there, too :)mikotondria3

Yes mikotondria!
Eggs! They are awesome. Great for breakfast and any other time. They have every vitamin apart from vitamin C and v high quality protein (they're a must have for body builders). I eat 2 a day.
Note that the vitamins are contained within the yolk which is very fatty, but it's natural fat. Fat is good, you need it, just don't get ok much.
Get your eggs folks, they are ace!
- Totally. When I get an egg-craving, nothing else will do. Wife's vegan now, so it's a bit tricky getting them in.mikotondria3
- I go through a lot of eggs but i always dump the yolks because of the cholesterolmoldero
- I can see why moldero, but the fatty yolk has all the vitamins! If you don't have cholesterol problems I wouldn't worry!Hombre_Lobo

- Bit of a lame video but explains the basics behind the carbohydrate/ getting fat connectionshapeaspect
- Nice! Yeh v lame video but it will be helpful to the masses. Don't mix carbs and fat or that insulin gets all over those carbs!Hombre_Lobo

The Food Hourglass !
Written by a gerontologist, a doctor specialized in age related diseases. The book basically summarizes the scientific research of the effects of different kinds of food on your body. And only large studies, published in scientific publications like Nature, Science, The Lancet .. and so on.
Now only available in Dutch , English translation is on the way
: http://www.goodreads.com/book/sh… ( use google to translate the comments)It's an update of the old food triangle. Instead of cramming the bad food in the top, it creates a whole "bad triangle" where all the unhealthy stuff is placed, which you should ideally replace as much as possible with its healthy counterpart of the bottom triangle.
Boils down to : no carbs ( no potatoes, rice, pasta or bread), no sugar, no dairy products except some cheese once in a while, no red meat, only white meat and only a couple of times a week in very little portions, lots of vegetables and fruit, lots of healthy Omega3 fats ( salmon, sardines ...)(for as far as fish is still healthy nowadays) , no transfats ( margarine, fried food .. ), avoid saturated fats ( butter .. ) , no processed foods. Eat dark chocolate regularly, have a glass of alcohol regularly, drink lots of water, take some extra vitamins, and so on. If you live in the US you're living on pure corn, so you're fucked, don't even bother :)
Calory restriction in general is advized also ( but eating lots of veggies and fruits is already a form of calory restriction, since you're getting a lot of nutrients for much less calories)
Causes quite the stir in Belgium (and The Netherlands), and has created a change in consumption over here. The
book explains for example how transfats are impossible to remove from margarine, and why transfats are a leading cause of heart and coronary disease. This has caused brands like Becel to change their advertizing to appear more "scientifically healthy"Been living like this for 6 months, lost 5 or 6 kg and I'm eating as much as I want from the "good triangle". I recommend it :)
- looks like I have to increase my red wine consumption significantly! I’ll be 100, healthy and drunk, yay!pressplay
- Fuck that, I'd rather die than never eat bread again.
etc.mikotondria3 - Looks v interesting and practical.
That's the trick, finding healthy replacements for stuff you often eatHombre_Lobo

We recently picked up a recumbent bike so that we have a way to stay active after work and when our kid goes to sleep - times when we just dont feel like jumping in the car and driving to the gym.
I've been doing about an hour on the bike this past week while I play video games / watch TV.
Super-easy and convenient. I recommend it to anyone who is stationery in the evening.
