running. I'm a very active person but never was a runner. For some reason after turning 30 you get sudden urges to run? Anyway I've been running just 1-2 miles at dusk and it's done wonders for how I feel. Stress levels have gone way down, skin cleared up dramatically, sleep has become way better, and I don't feel tired all day. And it only takes ~15 minutes a day, right out of the front door and around a few blocks.
This and drinking a ton of water
- I *just*can't*run for more than a hundred yards, it's agony on all my organs. Other than that I'm pretty fit, walk for hours, etc.mikotondria3
- Running is great, but 15 mins! The first 20-30 mins is the hardest part by far! Your doing the hard part and missing the easy bit!Hombre_Lobo
- Easy bit. But fitting it around work etc is tough. Perhaps try intervals, they are better for your heart, cv and nervous systemHombre_Lobo
- Or, don't change anything as you're happy! running is great! :)Hombre_Lobo
- Push through the pain with running. After a week or two it won't hurt as much. Eventually it'll feel greathereswhatidid
- miko, if you can't run over 100 yards without dying, then you can't call yourself "pretty fit".Presta

it's better to run a fast two mile than a slow 5 mile.
- This is an opinion; time is the only factor. A long sustained run can do wonders for mind, body & spirits...ideaist
- it's easy to run a bunch of miles at a slow pace...you get better results by higher intensity.cbass99
- Nope - it's healthier to walk for an hour than to run for 10 minutes, or sprint for 1.Walk hard, mind you, and puff.mikotondria3

Google has a nifty food calculator thing.
I asked Google "fat content of cherries"
https://www.google.com/search?q=…
and another example: "protein in chicken"
https://www.google.com/search?q=…- funny how the photo they use for chicken is a big heap of deep friedsine

I followed this guy religiously for about 6 months and he got me right into raw vegan - i never felt better in my life, more energy, the small amount of fat i had melted away in weeks. However in the end it was not a sustainable way of life for me - i enjoy all foods too much
I do recommend you watch some of his videos if you want to get excited about eating healthy - sometimes he does go a bit extreme for me in some aspects, but basically hes a champion

My wife and I switched from the super nice, pretty expensive gym we went to for quite a few years last week to a very cheap, very basic gym that is a 2 minute walk from our house here in Chicago. The old gym is a little over half a mile, so longer walk or bus.
I've already gone more in the past week than I'd been going at the old place. The closeness to us really helps - get in, get out, shower st home. It's much less intimidating than the nicer gym.
Trying to do right on the food and diet part of things. But overall I love how good you feel with frequent exercise. Every time I feel this good I kick myself for not staying commited to it all the time.

Ever since I got back from Turkey about 4 months ago I've slowly turned to a more Paleo diet. I'm at about 85 percent Paleo right now and have lost 20 pounds. I still lack the motivation to go to 24hr fitness or go for a run on a routine basis though, so I've have really been considering CrossFit. I just discovered a new CrossFit gym about 5 minutes from my house, I talked to the owner and have read some of his reviews online. This guy is the shit and the place looks really dope. I'm seriously considering going full bore in to this thing and pay the $130 per month. I quit smoking which saves me $100 per month plus if I quit 24hr fitness that's another $20 so this justifies the new $130 per month expense for Crossfit.
I'm curious to know if anyone is currently involved in CrossFit or is thinking about it. I'd love to train, look and feel like an athlete while I'm 37.

RUNNING!
In terms of all the running short and fast or long and slow. There are pros and cons to both, but in my experience and the trainers I've spoken too, the benefits of short and fast running out weigh the benefits of long slow running.
The major reasons are that if you do a 5 mile interval session mixing up sprinting and jogging (or walking and sprinting), it puts a huge demand on your heart and nervous system, the change in pace is very good for your health and ultimately burns more calories.
If you were to run a steady 10 mile with no pace change, it's good for you for sure, but keeping your heart rate slightly elevated at the same rate for a long time is not as beneficial as changing your heart rate. Changing it is harder for your system and more demanding and thus better for you.
The only benefits of long slow running to my knowledge is that it is kept in a slightly more fat burning zone than shorter more intense workouts. Most say the fat burning zone is about 110-140 heart
Further to that if you can do 5 miles of intervals it's very very likely you could do 10 miles of steady pace jogging.
However someone who can run a steady pace 10 mile is less likely to be able to do a 5 mile interval. So the benefits of pace changing intervals are more applicable to various exercises.Throw in the bonus that the interval running work out will give you more testosterone production and growth hormone, like most short and intense exercises, (which will affect overall energy and muscle growth) than the longer steady running and it seems like a better choice for most people.
Naturally this doesn't apply for those training to run long and steady.
