I'm pacing this one out. Wife and I are watching one episode at a time knowing it's a short run. Finished episode 3 and have to admit I got a little emo during it. So freakin' good.
My only criticism so far is how the mother's character is in a constant state of complete distress. I feel like she should have another side to her at least part of the time.
- I get it that her eldest son is the parent in the situation, but at some point I expect a mother turns from hysterics to focused action.monospaced
- She's been working her ass off at that store for more than 10 years, her ex husband is an asshole, she's trying her best to keep her family together and...Maaku
- her youngest is taken from her. Leave Britney alone...Maaku
- and she's kind of a bad mother... I get it... I'm just saying she's quite 2-dimensional so far, that's allmonospaced
- yep - Winona let's it down if anything but I think she is meant to be like that.fadein11
- that's the movie though. The kids are the most rational characters that solve the mystery. Almost all the adults, save for that cop, are completely oblivious.monNom
- It's a total 80's kids-save-the-day storyline.monNom

It’s The Goonies meets Firestarter in the movie The Gate following Nightmare on Elm Street plot line with ET mist and flashlights.

- isn't it weird? I instantly knew what it was, like I just saw something that was mine and I haven't seen in a while. cool feeling.sofakingback
- Exactly. I paused it and yelled to my wife who is just younger than me and had to have it explained.monospaced
- what about peechee folders? lol i still have a few of those.sea_sea
- don't remember those ... are they also in the show? I love finding the little easter eggs of 80s nostalgia in this showmonospaced
- yea i saw a few in there at some point. kids would draw all kinds of stuff on the, very 70's/80's http://freerepublic.…sea_sea

Pretty fuckin awesome.
So thats us 80's kids in a nut shell huh? It felt insanely familiar on so many levels. But not in a bad way, am I right?
You know how some times you want Tarantino's stuff and you think, wait thats a straight rip from that old kung Fu movie and some how it doesn't feel right, it feels dirty.
This wasn't that, it felt like a true continuation of all those great sic-fi horror flicks we saw as kids. Specially the ones that were intriguing but kinda freaked me the hell out, like:
The Gate and Deadly Friend.
One personal favorite thing about movies when I was a kid were the toys and gadgets featured in movies! Like in ET when he's playing with the Star Wars toys, I loved those toys and back then it wasn't like it is now where you can go online and look up rare toys, so when you saw them it was like: oh shit thats yoda!!!
Also, I like how in this story can run with most ideas without being bogged down with dick-head comments like "oh bullshit that can't happen!" The story is out there enough that they can do whatever they want and the movie is just enjoyable.

- Why did they have to change the title font? It looks lame that they made it look like the Goonies.desmo

Saw at least 20 people in gimp outfit on the street. There's gotta be a party or orgy near by.

Wow glad I stumbled across this thread...great series.
People were comparing to past films...it reminds me a little of Drive and It Follows with the heavily stylized aspects combined with a real story.
Actually I think JJ Abrams made a movie that was similar to this (with more lens flare and action sequence)...also about a group of kids in the early 80s, had a monster and was sort of a tribute to Spielberg. But was not nearly as effective as this series.
I like the idea of something that is such an obvious homage but also takes itself completely seriously and has good storytelling, acting etc.
- You're referencing Super 8. Decent film with good actors.monospaced
- for a second i thought you were talking about the final girls lol https://www.youtube.…sea_sea

Finished it last night. Completely loved it.
The Duffer Brothers got skills.

For those curious about Stephen King book cover references:
Matt Duffer: When we were developing the title sequence, I think we sent 30 paperback covers to the people who were making the title sequence. I think 20 of them were Stephen King. We made a little notebook to help sell the show when we were pitching it and the cover of it was aesthetically modelled after a Stephen King book. I think we literally took the Firestarter paperback and put a picture of a bike on an empty road.

Finished it last night. Perfect balance of wrapping things up, and leaving them open for the imagination and/or followup season/sequel.
I was really impressed with the sound mixing in the final episodes too. In full surround the audio really enhanced the experience, and it's hard to imagine getting the full experience without at least a full range sound behind it.
