does this mean we can also start charging more?
"...Canadian tire paid $28 millin for their site, and I'm offering you the bargain basement price of 1 million...complete with flash animation and spinning flame-text logos..." he he he

before you bash the site, the software itself costed alot plus the top of the line hardware...
they didnt just hire a web shop to do the work..
they hired a largest consulting firm in the world to do the work. This just didnt involve making a site and doing the regular stuff that smaller web shop would do.
we also did business analysis, strategy, operate, and others..
in a project this size, we dont just take the money and run. we have fulltime ppl working there to take care of things. most important thing with this project is the shared risk. if the site and its backend system didnt work properly, and failed to achieve its business goals, the companay does not get the money. how many companies that actually do that?

you should have spent some time on VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS
- MrDinky0
think about the audience ..
they are not designers...
we did extensive market research for it.it was more based on functionality and usability.
case in point: Target Europe, the ad campaigne calls for more up scale feel to the shop. This was done to get the message of high end appearence of cheap goods thus making ppl think they are getting a bargan. this back fired cause ppl thought target as a high end good store.
visual communication? the point of visual com is to effectively get the message across to the user. like yahoo, it doesnt look that great but it does its job.

greeeaaattt... Just after reading this, now I get to go to work for 25/hr...
yay.
- MrDinky0
just because it doesnt have 45 degree and angle and doesnt follow regular trends
so does it make it bad?
if i were you i wouldnt talk about visual communication
- sp0
exactly. i'm not sure if designers actually understand full site development, after all.
hey, mr. dinky, what backend system did you use?
and, what legacy system did they have before?
if you can say...

unlike most small design firms, the design did not dictate the full development.
the marketing, functional team got together to create a sound business case that works. from that point, the functionality was tested by userbility group to meet the business goals. the designer had VERY little to do with this site. like i said, this was driven by two main things, business and funtionality.
i cant say what were used in this project unless its public knowledge.
lets just say that we had to build everything from a scratch using old data.

all i care about is the design, what percentage went to it?
- MrDinky0
i think alot of designers lack business sense (dont take it personally).
either yuo hate it or love from the looks of it. most dont consider the business, functionality, usability and others.
- MrDinky0
i cant say.. but i know it was VERY VERY small
- MrDinky0
mind you .. i dont work at the consulting company anymore...
but i felt that i had to defend it.

i agree with mr dinky. design is obviously not very important in this case. i'm sure a very tiny part of the budget considered visual "design". visual communication was obviously considered but coolness is not appropriate for this site.
i think most of the people here think good design is just something that looks cool.
it's pretty sad that as web developers, most people here are making fun of the high cost when, obviously, a tremendous amount of thought went into this project. you're all just diminishing the respect for this industry if you think every web site can be constructed for under 5k.
