i kinda figured.
and, i agree with the solution you came up with.
it's really not a bad site at all. of course, i like google, yahoo and amazon's sites too.
dumb me.

i wasn't talking about design trends and what designers think is cool
I'm talking about, I think the tabs along the top are a poor way of laying out your navigation. Need a better way to layout info of that amount
as well the type isn't the greatest - what is that arial?
The center of main page is fairly boring, colour could have been used to spice it up a bit more
There doesn't seem to be any type of underlying grid structure. Your top tabs are mostly in the upper left side of the page while you have the main content window spreading across the page - could have been tightened up to give a better all around feel.
as well, like alot of sites there is tons of content on the main page without much of sense of hierarchy to it
that is what I was talking about - not oh damn you should have thrown in a pixel stretch and some 45 degree angles

thanks clayf
also.. the designers who worked the site are very talented....
not the best 'cool' design work that they have done.
- unknown0
which part have you been responsible for MrDinkyWinkyPinky?
It's not as bad as some would say here...I only think that some tables need more spacing (padding)...
- sp0
those are some very good points, though, matt.

i totall disagree with you because, we did user testing and market testing for it.
you didnt see the data. this was ACTUALLY the most pleasing look and feel for the market that we were targeting for.
the research drove the design not designers who cant design.

the money they spent on this site should easily allow for a complete visual redesign, for problably very little money.

answer my Q, dinky...
Another Q:
What would be very, very little?
$100k?
$50k?
$10k?for frontend visual design?

yes there are table problems. it was worst when the site went live first..
its hard to correct the problem at once, when you have 13000 products on line with massassive data base that needs constant changes.
i wasnt a designer. i was a management consultant on this. providing techinical / user experience analysis.
- clayf0
i'm guessing that a complete front end redesign could be done for less than US10k (CAN15.6k)
- MrDinky0
i cant say...
when i joined and left the company, i signed a contract that i would not expose any part of business practice.
i would like to but i cant...
sorry dude

CSS?
just a central css file?
or when nescessary a CSS-hub with @import functions?
Just a bit of code would do it for the entire site!
- matt240
just seems like another example of a site that has great, sophisticated backend. therefore, most of the time was spent on the backend so the front end suffered
- clayf0
matt24 - why do you think the backend suffered? mrdinky just said that the design is a result of a lot of user feedback research.... that's what people want.
designer's would never shop at canadian tire anyway.
- MrDinky0
i think it can be done for less than that...
but to understand the actual system of the site and implement the changes, it would cost more...
its not as simple and cutting up some images and posting them..
- Jamesh0
I think someone pocketed about $27,950,000.

there were alot of suggestions for many different approaches but it was intergration with vendor software (like Bluemartini) make the call.
- ankixa0
the site does have over 200 employees......they do need to be paid.
don't ask why they need that many people to maintain it.....it seems a bit ridiculous to me.
- unknown0
hmm...
anyways:
"i think it can be done for less than that... "
I don't think it should......never underestimate the power of a visually pleasing layout!!!

i dont know if you ever worked on a project that are over $1 million but its very very complex task.
when someone is investing that much money business case and functionality comes first. design works with the them not dictating it.
like i said, this design was the result of research.
