- The sick thing is it’s usually what the bible tells them what to desire. It’s drilled into them from a very young agefuturefood
- There might not be any religion if it weren't drilled into their them at a young age. How else would so many people believe so many impossible things?CyBrainX

The concept of forgiveness and absolution is clever.
It enables a Christian to do “bad” things but still judge others for doing the very same things.
Empowering hypocrites since 4000 BC!
- more like 300AD, no?Nairn
- The hypocrisy you describe goes against actual xtian principles (making them 'false xtians')—so you don't really have a point other than they're hypocrites. :)PonyBoy

- As long as you donate weekly, you are a good Christian.********

- imagine a world where you can distinguish between "good" and "bad" people with a quote from a book and a service what makes people confess all their bad acts.sted
- For repeating these quotes in return, these bad deeds of the people who use this service should be nullified.sted
- those who determine the gravity of the given crime never abuse the information they have obtained, neither when they determine the number of repetitionssted
- nor afterwards.sted
- not even when they commit an evil deed.sted
- or one of theirs.sted
- never.sted

- You’re forgetting repentance and penance which are also part of Christian forgiving. Absolution cannot be given without them.Morning_star

I've spent a fair amount of time in Italy these last few years, and have seen the grandest of edifices put up in Christ's name - as they have been in my own and many other country's too, obviously - but the sheer opulence of the ones in Italy, at the height of the respective powers that comprised it? It's crazy-ridiculous.And against everything Christ himself taught.
It's so crazy to me how the entiriety of Christ's teaching has been so utterly mangled and abused to exact power, might and capital in the hands and roots that grew the sheer perversion that is the catholic, and most every other, church.
But here we are, and it's entirely normalised.
- All the symbols ( † ), sainthoods and relics etc go completely against Christ's actual teachings too... 'perversion' is too kind a wordPonyBoy

"It did fuel many serious art movements and there’s some merit to that of course"
– monospacedI was in the Cattedrale di Pisa, next to the famous leaning tower, earlier this year and I was absolutely and utterly taken by a piece - a small and apparently inconsequential piece as I can't find the fucker on the internet to keep a photo. It was an image of christ described in gold leaf, and the rays on the halo were just.. sublime.I literally stared at this thing for ten minutes.
This was a small piece, off in a corner in a ridiculously-extravagant edifice, the likes of which I cannot even begin to imagine how it was all put together, and all I could think was "This is the absolute antithesis of what Christ wanted".
All that concentration of money and power, over so many centuries, fucking over all the people that Christ most wanted to help.
As much as I was bewitched by that beautiful, golden representation of Jesus, I knew that it was inherently disgusting.
- Yeah I agree, religion is a pretty despicable thing. Just sayin they paid for a lot of nice art and architecture. Chill.monospaced
- Please don’t interpret what I’m saying as defending religion. That’s really not my thing, at all.monospaced
- I’m just remarking on the same thing you are. That it was absolutely beautiful, extravagant, cherished, and everywhere.monospaced
- Sorry, wasn't attacking you, just using what you said as a pivot to what i was thinking amongst all of that...extravagance.Nairn

- If not religion the void inevitably is filled with something worse. Much like the void China will fill when the USA ceases to be the global superpower.hotroddy
- Much like the socialism that will ultimately encroach on this country when there is no longer a middle class.hotroddy
- That’s simply not true. That’s just your assumption, which stems from your absolute inability to comprehend that religion isn’t necessary to be good.monospaced
- Also your analogy not only doesn’t make sense, it’s so off topic it is absolutely meaningless.monospaced
