I think there is no best running shoe.
I think it comes down to personal comfort.
Among the many brands that produce shoes for running, you just have to try them on, walk with them and see how they feel on your own feet.We all have different feet, wide, length, shape, etc.
And different ways of walking/ running too. So the chances of a single brand dominating the "running shoe" category seems almost impossible.And you can't really be influenced by looks, cause pretty much all running shoes look hideous... no matter the brand..

I use these right now:
I'm sure they are not the best ones, but while still ugly, they are not as ugly as most shoes (to my taste at least) and they were under $50
And I'm no pro runner, so that is good enough for me. :)
I'm actually consider buying the same pair in a few months, I love that they almost feel like a sock

asics classics look nice for causal wear but they tend to wear out fast. on the other hand, i like their running shoes. they're really well made.

Ironically, it is the rip-off Nike's on ebay that look the best. Usually old designs, but with better color schemes.
It still boggles my mind why they are all so hideous. 10+ years ago they looked reasonable.

agreed! They don't even make 1 color shoes that could hide the ugly decals from a distance... You think someone would make a plain and simple running shoe that doesn't look like some sci-fi head designed it.
