You have a 50/50 chance that the Nikes will be a good sneaker for you to run in. They're for people who basically want to look cute and pretty while running. Otherwise you better go seek a professional to find out which sneaker is best for you.

I'll use Nike lunars under 3 miles. They aren't a 30 mile shoe.

As everyone here has already said, you should go to a running store and get fitted. The right shoe depends on the terrain, foot shape, stride and distance/type workout.
I only started running a year ago. My first pair of shoes where the Puma Faas 300 that I had bought a while back and had only used occasionally. They got beat up very quickly but I liked the fact that they were extremely light and flexible.
The first time I got fitted the salesperson proposed me the NB 880, Asics Cumulus and Brooks Ghost.
The Cumulus cushioning was very soft but felt too different from what I had gotten used to with the Faas, I wanted to feel a bit of the road beneath. The Ghost's sole felt a bit stiff (again, compared to the Faas) so I chose the 880 because the upper mesh felt the best fit around my foot and the sole was the most flexible. Since I had read a lot of good reviews about the Brooks Ghost I got a pair of them later.
The NB 880 have been OK but after wearing the Ghosts on long runs 15-20km (9-12mi) I'm happy I got them as second pair. You really start to feel the difference in those last kms, nice cushioning. The upper on the Ghosts has proven to be more durable than the 880s and they got nice details like the twisted shoestrings and the shoestring loop around the tongue. I've been using the NB for shorter runs but I'll be trying the Cumulus next time and definitely upgrading the Ghost.
TLDR: If you're a weekend runner and want to look good at the mall get some Nikes. Otherwise Brooks Master Race.

One of the problems going to a store is you are limited to what they stock. Here in Denver, there is only one place (that I know of) that carry the higher end.
Personally, I'd trust magazines over teenage sales people (same was for mtn biking, always amazed how sales knew less than I did). I'll try once more as I do want opinions, if I can find someone that actually runs (given my calf problems).
Maybe I'll do the Zappos thing - buy 6 pairs and send back 5 :-)

Inserts - anyone have these? Either the memory foam ones ($40) or the custom ones ($80)?
I am thinking I may have been mistaken and I should not be running in Nike's. :-\
(calm problems)...shame, never had problems running on them for so long.Looking at the Asics Kayano-20 and the Brook Adrenaline or Transcend.
- I can vouch for these:

If you have calf problems changing your shoes will help but might not be enough. You should be stretching AFTER each run and warming up before. A foam roller and strengthening exercises will help too.
The first time I increased my distance I had knee pain for several days (IT Band). The pain wasn't so bad, after a week of rest I could run again. I did some biking to compensate meanwhile. When I changed shoes I tried the a longer distance again and although the pain wasn't as bad it was still there and sometimes prevented me from finishing a run.
I then worked on strengthening exercises like squats and got a foam roller that I used after long runs, this helped even more. The foam roller can be painful but you feel the relief right away. After some weeks of going my traditional running paths I went back to the place where I had tried my first long run and the pain came back again although it was very minimal. I realized that it was because I was running in the uneven ground (the forest, although it was very flat), it seems that although the road is a harder surface my legs prefer stability over softness. I've kept the road for long runs and forest/parks for shorter ones. From my experience, it's a combination of things that will help you with the pain, don't just rely on the shoes.
If all else fails go see a doctor.

What do you do against stinky shoes and feet?
- Antibacterial spray on shoes & rolled up newspaper if they're moist. Maybe change socks for the feet.********

OR - yeah, I am trying more and more things (just off of a two year stagnant back pain issue, so I think it is related to not running for so long...that's the longest I've gone since I was 10). I always thoroughly stretch, but am doing more when I don't run.
Looking into The Stick (roller thing), but the foam roller might be good, thanks.
Off to PT next week, we'll see what they say. New shoes and inserts today.
(I do yoga, etc., etc. daily....quite frustrating)
