So if i want something simple and relatively inexpensive - a starter kit for drum machines / percussion as it were - I do a lot of ambient guitar work and sound / drone stuff, so I want some percussion but I don't need something overwhelming - what might I look for?

gerald makes it look so easy!
- @ 1:45 is he controlling the tempo of the synced 101 sequence with the tap tempo of the 808? never used either of these pieces, just curiousfuturefood
- think he's talking about either tapping or programming in steps on the 808 to trigger the 101's sequencer...kingsteven
- that is dope, didnt know it had that feature. wonder if the 606 did the same.futurefood
- superb. thanks for sharingfadein11
- @futurefood yes, you can trigger the 101 with the high or low toms on the 606.emphor
- I love triggering my 101 with the drum machines.. its such a quick fun way to bash out some music..autoflavour

What I was looking for in this thread: figuring out the best starter controller / box / anything to get started on producing percussion tracks for my mostly ambient / drone / guitar and piano stuff.
My budget is incredibly tight and so right now I'm considering the Akai Pro MPK Mini II - keys and pads both along with software and sound banks for $100. Plus since I already play piano it seems like a nice little bonus to not just be the drum pads.
If anyone has a reasonable alternative - I'm literally just stepping in to this part of music - let me know. I can't tell if the similar price for Ableton (the intro - can't afford the suite or anything else) would be worth it ... I already mix live sounds with Soundbooth (ghetto but it works), but I'll take some points of reference for all this.
(@microkorg I did check out the TE PO, it seems like it might be almost too rudimentary for me? I'm looking for something that i can hit a little harder, but it looked cool.)
- Keys on that are terribly small. M-Audio Axiom 25 is something you should look intoimbecile
- Looks like Axiom is discontinued but the Oxygen is their new breed of it? Either way, it looks good, thanks for the rec I'll look in to itcolin_s
- i love my axiom, it's a tank. if budget is a concern, consider usedimbecile

- got one a while back (adam 10"), love it but still not ready to fork out the $$$ for a decent monitor controller to toggle it. sitting gathering dust atm.kingsteven
- considered the mackie big knob as I use a pair of mr5s with this. maybe in a couple weeks. for now, I'm enjoying the newfound lowendimbecile

damn, the last 3 weeks have been awesome.. so much uni work I am supposed to be doing, which means lots of procrastination.. which means shit tonne of new music.
been about 4 months since I have had any proper time in the studio to make music, all uni work..
but yep, smashed out about 7 or 8 new tracks.. mainly at 16 or 32 bar loop stage, but pretty much completely developed.. so not that much else to do except arrange.
super happy
also picked up Serum today.. been writing a lot on the trains and just getting sick of the usual abledroid sounds..
- I've avoided serum and massive - feels like an easy trap to sound like every other producer?inteliboy
- maybe.. I don't know.. just feeling at a loss lately with abledroid.. even with the studio version, I feel like I have rinsed the usable sounds..autoflavour
- have only played a bit with serum so far, it sounded ok.. im sure there is going to be a lot of things I don't use, but just sick of being stuck for soundsautoflavour
- I say that sitting in a studio surrounded by synths.. but at 8:30 in the morning on the train for a hour, I am inside the box.. and the box is bareautoflavour
- totally have had the exact same thought processinteliboy
