My jesus-freak buddy from high school was a great wrestler and had "I Wrestle For Jesus" embroidered on his warm-up suit.

Designbot, I appreciate your input and I see your point about new forms of communication and progression and such... that being said, I disagree on a very fundamental level because I do not prescribe to religious doctrines whatsoever. It is in my opinion that the 'spreading of the good word' should never have ocurred...and had that been the case, billions may have been spared torture, death, war, poverty, oppression et al.
I respect your beliefs regardless :)

kello, thanks for the respect...same back at you. Regardless if we disagree I don't hold anything against you or anyone else who has different views.
I am interested to know in what way you are referring to "billions may have been spared torture, death, war, poverty, oppression et al."
I imagine you may be talking about some of the reprehensible things that have been done in the name of "Christianity". Which all I can say to that is that it simply goes against everything Jesus and the Bible stand for. That is to say that these acts were carried out by people who were either completely confused and deceived, or were never really Christian. I would tie this back into similar things such as Hitler claiming to be "Christian". But I would also say that these same horrible things that you have listed have actually been carried out against Christians as well. So I guess my point is, I don't think Christianity is truly to blame for these things.
The only other thing I would like to point out is the tremendous good that Christian church has also done. I could sit here and run a long list of things, but I think you probably have at least come in contact with a Christian organization that helps the poor, or is there to help people in the aftermath of natural disasters (like with Katrina when the government failed it's own people and the church stepped in along with other non-profits) and the many other good things that can be accounted for that people often overlook.

But kello, keep in mind that there are charlatans and true devotees running around under the same banner. It's been this way for centuries. I have never, ever heard of the true gospel—the one that's all about unconditional love, grace, forgiveness, treating others with respect and kindness, and truth—having an adverse effect on any civilization. Yeah, the Crusades were launched in the name of Christ; yeah, the Salem witch hunts were instigated by Puritans who went berserk; yeah, Jerry Falwell and Bob Jones have made the rest of the Christian world look like legalistic assholes—but the truth is that Christ and his message have never had anything to do with torture, death, war, poverty or oppression. It is PEOPLE and their own twistings of the Bible's message who have produced travesties like David Koresh and the worst, Hitler.

gramme. absolutely right. had the aforementioned not occurred in the name of religion they would have occurred regardless in the name of a myriad other options. i appreciate the ideals of christ. i really do. the problem is that on a mass scale they only ever worked in theory.

i'm a staunch atheist who respects you both. i expect the same in return. i'm not even bothering to provide you with the multitude of reasons WHY i don't subscribe to religious dogma. those conversations have and continue to go on and on and on and on.
to say 'i got this one', to me, goes against the very principles you're both trying to communicate here. live and let live...right?

I think gramme just said that just so we didn't bombard the thread with similar responses.

I get what you're saying kello, but I respectfully disagree. I think that almost everything we take for granted in regards to morality comes from Christian tradition, at least here in the western world. In all parts of the world, literally millions of Christians over the centuries have engaged in acts of kindness: feeding/clothing the poor, travelling to fly-blown corners of the world to teach people vital career skills, the list goes on. It was a Christian who developed the first 12-step program, from which many have spun off and unfortunately become degraded as they spun away from the true "Higher Power." Christians have for centuries been involved in efforts such as Habitat for Humanity. Now, these things are great, they are tangible, they have happened very much in the physical world, rather than in theory.
But: the ultimate gift that the gospel has to give the world is forgiveness from all of our shortcomings, and eternal communion with God. Christ offers the ultimate victory—freedom from the curse of death.

fair enough guys, no worries here.

Seriously tho, I don't think there is one of us that thinks you should not have the right to believe in or practice your religion. Our problems almost always come from charlatans using your religion to change public policy and things like that. Seems to me that these people do you a far greater disservice than Mimio, TBO or I could ever do to you.

Yep, you're 200% right DrBombay. My dad has always said "The Devil's favorite place to hang out is church."
It's easy to forget about the good things done in Christ's name, when other people continue to mangle the truth. That's the Devil's favorite trick. He isn't capable of creating anything from scratch, but he is the ultimate liar, the ultimate manipulator of that which already is.

We have over 100,000 Christian men & woman proudly serving the U.S. government and representing Jesus Christ himself blowing up families, raping women and slaughtering innocent children in Iraq! God Bless America!
- you are clearly ignorant.SteveJobs
- Clearly the Christians who kill innocent children are ignorant ones!3point14159
- designbot0
^And how many athiests and people of other beliefs are currently doing the same?
see my point?
- Sorry to imform you that I am a Christian, but I speak the the truth and I am not a sheep!3point14159
- huh?designbot
- well I'm no sheep either. I fail to see your point. Most Christians have been against the war since it's birth.designbot
- More Christians have started wars and killed people in the name of God since it's birth!3point14159

Oh SNAP.
another reason they don't let gay people into the american military. they'd foil all of the abhorrent protocol.
